Currently, you need to to wear glasses in order to get the 3D effect from your television.  There is technology that may allow us to leave the glasses behind however.  A type of screen with holes covers the tv screen and causes one image to be blocked from view on the left side and the other image to be blocked on the right side.

This is still a fairly new technology and it isn’t quite ready yet.  Currently the viewing angle is limited, meaning that you only get the 3D effect if you’re looking at the television from fairly straight on.  The good thing is that researchers will be constantly working to improve the viewing angle.  It wasn’t long ago that flat screen tv’s looked bad from the side as well and they have come a long way in a short time.

Although we don’t know how soon it will be, one day the concept of wearing glasses to watch 3D will seem very antique.  For now it is still cutting edge and you’ll have to make do with them if you want to watch a 3D program.
